The Brit Awards 2015 took place at the O2 London last night and was broadcast to a live TV audience. Ant & Dec took over the hosting duties from James Corden in a bid to revive flagging viewing figures, but they were far from their comedic best.
Of the other memorable moments, Madonna managed to fall off the stage without it effecting the performance, which shows her professionalism. There were awards predictably for the two leading lights of British vocals – Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith. Royal Blood picked up the award for Best British Group, even though judging from the reaction on social media, not too many people knew who they were. Kanye West produced the shows ‘edgy’ performance, but apparently calls flooded in complaining about too much being muted out. Do people still call Television shows?? Obviously tweets and e-mails don’t carry enough gravitas when complaining.
What about the trophy itself? In keeping with recent years, the blank canvas award was enhanced by a British designer. This year it was Tracey Emin’s turn and so the award featured her trademark handwritten messaging. It also featured a large rosette, which Emin described as ‘slightly shieldish, but also like a pair of wings’.
It’s a nice design, and the concept of redesigning it each year makes it interesting. But you can’t help feeling that the way to create a more iconic award, is to take the Oscars approach of creating a good design and sticking to it.
