The metals Gold, Silver, and Bronze are in the same column in the periodic table. Bronze is at the top, followed by Silver one spot down, which is followed by Gold down another spot. The further down an element is, the more precious and rare it is. Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals were first awarded at the 1904 Olympic games and have come to be universally recognised as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place respectively.
